What is the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights?
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is an autonomous body of the Organization of American States (OAS). It is tasked with promoting and protecting human rights in the American states. The IACHR was established in 1959 and is composed of seven independent members elected by the OAS General Assembly in their personal capacity. The IACHR is responsible for monitoring the observance of human rights in the American states and holding accountable those who violate them. The Commission carries out a variety of activities to promote and protect human rights in the region. These activities include public hearings, sending representatives to investigate human rights violations, and issuing reports on conditions in the American states. The IACHR also provides technical assistance to states in the implementation of human rights-related legal and policy reforms. In California, the IACHR can be a valuable resource in protecting human rights. It can bring international pressure to bear on states in the region to comply with international standards of justice and respect for human rights. In addition, it can provide technical assistance to California in developing and implementing laws and programs to promote and protect human rights. The IACHR is therefore an important tool in California for ensuring that everyone’s human rights are respected and protected.
