What is the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights?

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) is an autonomous organization of the Organization of American States (OAS) that is responsible for promoting and protecting human rights in the Americas. Located in Washington, DC, the IACHR has the authority to receive, process, and monitor cases involving human rights violations in OAS member states. The Commission also has the authority to issue reports and recommendations on a range of topics related to human rights, as well as to conduct on-site visits, research, and public hearings. The IACHR is composed of seven commissioners that are elected by the OAS for four-year terms and are eligible for re-election. They are chosen from a wide array of backgrounds, including international law, human rights, public policy, and public administration. Additionally, the Commission consists of a staff of legal professionals and human rights experts who are responsible for providing legal assistance, research, and logistical support to the Commissioners. The IACHR works to strengthen coordination between the OAS member states in promoting respect for and observance of the fundamental rights of individuals. It also reinforces the work of a range of regional and international organizations in the defense of human rights. Finally, it provides assistance to victims, who may bring cases directly to the Commission or to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights.
