What is the Immigration and Naturalization Service?
The Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) is a branch of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The INS has the responsibility for managing all aspects of immigration, including the protection of our borders, the enforcement of our immigration laws, and the granting of permanent residence to eligible foreign nationals. The INS is responsible for removing any individual who is in the United States illegally or is deemed to be a threat to public safety. This includes individuals who are deportable due to a criminal conviction or other dangerous activities. The INS is also responsible for monitoring individuals who enter the U.S. under a visa, ensuring they comply with the conditions of their visa. In Florida, the INS is responsible for identifying and removing individuals who are in the state illegally, or who have violated the terms of their visa. The INS may also be involved in cases of voluntary or involuntary deportation, in which an individual must leave the country for any reason. The INS works closely with other government agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, to ensure efficient processing of immigration cases and provide security for our borders. The INS also works with local and state law enforcement to help them detect and prevent illegal activity both within and outside of Florida.
