What is the TN visa?

The TN visa, also called the “Trade NAFTA” visa, is an employment visa for citizens of Canada and Mexico who wish to work in the United States. This type of visa is specifically for professionals from those two countries who are seeking temporary employment in a “pre-arranged business activity” in the United States. This visa is available to those who qualify under one of the specific professions that are covered under the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Some of the most common professions include accountants, lawyers, engineers, scientists, and medical professionals such as doctors and nurses. In order to apply for a TN visa, you must demonstrate that you meet the requirements specified in NAFTA, such as having the necessary qualifications, experience, and credentials. You must also have an offer of employment from an employer in the US, and the job must be within one of the above-mentioned occupations. In California, employers must ensure that the conditions of employment for TN visa holders are the same as for US citizens and permanent residents. The employer must also submit the appropriate documentation to the US Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS). In addition, applicants for a TN visa in California must submit proof of their ability to financially sustain themselves, such as a recent bank statement or proof of funds. The TN visa is usually issued for a period of up to three years, at which time it can be renewed under the same conditions.
