What is the H1B1 visa?

The H1B1 visa is a type of visa specifically for citizens of Singapore and Chile that want to work in California. This visa allows them to enter the United States on a temporary basis for up to one year. The visa can be renewed up to three times but it must be done within the initial one-year period. The H1B1 visa is available to individuals who plan to work in a “specialty occupation.” This includes occupations that require specialized knowledge and/or skills, such as engineering, computer programming, or finance. It is also available to non-immigrant professionals, such as doctors, dentists, and professors. In order to qualify for the H1B1 visa, an employer must file a petition with the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services. The employer must prove that they are offering a job to the foreign worker that requires specialized knowledge and/or skills. Also, they must prove that they are paying the applicant a wage that is equal to or greater than the prevailing wage in California for the same occupation. Once the petition is approved, the foreign worker must apply for the visa at the U.S. consulate in their home country. After the visa is approved, the foreign worker can enter the U.S. to begin work. The visa is valid for up to one year and can be renewed for up to three additional years. After the H1B1 visa expires, foreign workers must submit a new petition to renew the visa.
