What are the eligibility requirements to apply for a travel document?

In California, an applicant must meet certain eligibility requirements to apply for a travel document. In order for a non-citizen to be eligible to apply, they must first be a legal permanent resident (LPR) of the United States. LPRs have an Alien Registration Number, usually known as a “green card”, that allows them to stay and work in the United States without fear of being deported. Applicants must also have resided in California for at least one year before applying for a travel document. This requirement includes the date of your application and any intervening period during which you were physically present in the state. If an applicant has been outside of California for more than 6 months but less than one year, they may still qualify for a travel document depending on the circumstances. In addition, applicants should have a valid photo identification such as a driver’s license, state ID, foreign passport or other photo ID to prove their identity. The applicant must also bring proof of their current address, such as a lease, utility bill, or mortgage statement. Finally, applicants will be required to submit all necessary documents, such as a current Alien Registration Card, valid visa, valid passport, and a current and valid travel document application form. Upon completion of all of these requirements, an applicant may submit their application and receive a travel document within a short period of time.
