What is an F-2 visa?

An F-2 visa is a form of temporary nonimmigrant status for someone who wants to come to the United States to study. This visa is for the spouse and any children of an F-1 visa holder. F-1 visa holders are foreign students who are pursuing academic studies in the United States. Someone with an F-2 visa is allowed to enter the United States for the duration of the time that the F-1 visa holder is permitted to be in the country. The F-2 visa holder is not allowed to work while they are in the country unless it is part of an approved academic program. If someone who holds an F-2 visa wants to enroll in an academic program while in the United States, they will need to apply for a Change of Status to F-1 in order to be eligible for enrollment. They will also need to provide evidence that the student on the F-1 visa will be financially supporting them while they are in the United States. The F-2 visa can be renewed as long as the F-1 visa holder continues to meet the requirements for the F-1 visa, and the F-2 visa holder is not engaging in any activities that are not allowed under the F-2 visa.
