What is a diversity visa?

A Diversity Visa (DV) is a form of immigration visa offered to foreign nationals from countries that have had a low rate in the past of immigration to the United States. The purpose of the Diversity Visa program is to promote diversity in the U.S. population by allowing individuals from different countries and regions to come to the US. Visas are awarded on a random basis through a computer-generated lottery system. Applicants must meet certain criteria in order to be eligible to apply for the visa. These include having a high school diploma or equivalent, being a native of one of the countries listed on the yearly list of eligible countries, and meeting the English and other educational requirements. The Virginia state government has no specific laws or regulations regarding diversity visas. However, the U.S. State Department has established certain rules and regulations that must be adhered to when filing an application for a DV. Students who are currently enrolled in college or university in Virginia may be eligible to apply for a diversity visa. However, they must meet all of the requirements outlined by the U.S. State Department, including age and education requirements.
