What is the Green Card?
The Green Card, also known as the Permanent Resident Card, is an identification card used by the United States government to indicate that a person is legally authorized to live and work in the U.S. and to demonstrate their status as a permanent resident. It is used to verify the identity and immigration status of foreign-born individuals. The Green Card permits a foreign-born individual to stay in the United States for an indefinite period of time and typically has no expiration date. An individual with a valid Green Card is also eligible to apply for citizenship in the United States. To be eligible for a Green Card, an individual must demonstrate eligibility under a qualifying immigration status. This includes, but is not limited to, family-based immigration, employment-based immigration, refugee status, or any other humanitarian-based status. In addition to eligibility requirements, an individual must also demonstrate financial stability, pass a medical exam, pass a background check, establish they are in good health, and comply with all other U.S. immigration laws. In Washington, individuals who have obtained a Green Card will have the right to live permanently in the United States, work in any legal capacity, apply for or receive public benefits, be eligible for in-state tuition rates at public universities, access healthcare, and cannot be deported without a court hearing.
