What is an immigrant visa?

An immigrant visa is a document that allows someone to live in a foreign country permanently. It is granted by the government of the country that a person wishes to move to. In Michigan, an immigrant visa can be obtained from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). In order to be eligible for an immigrant visa, one must meet certain criteria. These criteria include having a valid passport, a valid visa application form, proof of a valid employment offer or valid contract with a U.S. company, proof of having enough funds to support oneself while in the U.S., and proving that the applicant is not likely to become a public charge in the U.S. Once an immigrant visa is granted, the applicant can travel to the U.S. and apply for a green card, which grants them lawful permanent residence status in the U.S. This allows the holder to legally live and work in the U.S. Immigrant visas are also granted to foreign nationals who have family members living in the U.S. and have been sponsored by them. This process is known as “family-based immigration” and enables the family member living in the U.S. to petition the foreign national for a visa. This type of visa enables the foreign national to come to the U.S. and live with their family in the U.S. permanently.
