How do I apply for a Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)?
For residents of Virginia to apply for permanent residency, or a green card, they must follow the steps outlined by the United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS). The first step to applying for a green card is to determine whether you are eligible to become a permanent resident. If you are eligible, you must then determine which form to use and collect the appropriate supporting documents. Next, applicants must fill out the USCIS form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. When filing this form, you will need to provide evidence of your identity, proof of your eligibility for permanent residence, and evidence to support any other claims made on the form. Additionally, you must also submit fees, biometrics (such as fingerprints), and any necessary photos. After submitting your application, USCIS will review your materials and decide whether or not to grant you an interview. If the agency decides to interview you, they will notify you of the date, time, and location for the appointment. At the interview, USCIS will ask you questions to determine if you are eligible for permanent residence. Finally, after USCIS has fully reviewed your application and conducted the interview, the agency will issue a decision on your green card application. Depending on your situation, you may have to wait several months before the USCIS sends you a response.
