What is the International Criminal Court (ICC)?
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an intergovernmental international court constituted in 2002 to investigate, prosecute, and crack down on individuals who have been accused of the most serious violations of international law, such as genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. It is based in The Hague, Netherlands and is the first permanent international criminal court in the world. The ICC has jurisdiction over nationals of any of the 122 member states, both inside and outside of their own country. The ICC is a judicial institution that works with national authorities to ensure that the most serious international crimes are prosecuted. It does not replace national courts and does not try individuals or governments. Instead, it serves to complement and reinforce them - for example, in cases where national authorities are unable or unwilling to prosecute. In addition, the ICC has a responsibility to ensure that justice is served for the victims of international crimes. The court has the authority to bring criminal proceedings for the most serious violations of international human rights law, including genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. The court does not consider residential issues or disputes between states, but instead focuses exclusively on the prosecution of individuals accused of committing international crimes. This means that the ICC has no jurisdiction over cases involving New Jersey residents.
