What is the International Criminal Court (ICC)?

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is an international court established to prosecute individuals for crimes against humanity, genocide, war crimes, and other crimes that occur in countries around the globe. The ICC is an independent, international tribunal that is separate from any one nation’s courts. It is based in The Hague, Netherlands, and has jurisdiction over individuals regardless of their nationality. The ICC was established in 2002 and is based on a 1998 treaty known as the Rome Statute, which was adopted by over 120 countries, including the United States. The United States, however, has yet to ratify the treaty and is not a party to the ICC. The ICC has jurisdiction over individuals who commit certain crimes in the ICC’s jurisdiction, such as genocide, war crimes, aggression, and crimes against humanity. The court has the power to issue arrest warrants for suspects, send out investigators, hold trials, and impose prison sentences on those that are convicted. The ICC works to ensure that justice is served in some of the world’s most egregious human rights violations. The ICC allows for justice to be served outside of any one nation’s criminal justice system and is an important part of international law.
