What is the International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism (FTT)?
The International Convention for the Suppression of the Financing of Terrorism (FTT) is a United Nations convention that requires all signatory states to criminalize financial activities that directly or indirectly support or are intended to finance terrorist acts. The treaty was adopted by the U.N.( United Nations) General Assembly in December of 1999 and came into force in April of 2002. Under the FTT, certain activities in New Jersey like engaging in, organizing, or directing the voluntary provision of funds to any person knowing that the funds might be used to carry out terrorist activities is considered a criminal act. Additionally, any attempt at laundering the proceeds of terrorist activities and any financing, including the collection and provision of funds for terrorist organizations is also considered a crime under the FTT. The FTT has been adopted by a majority of United Nations member states and has been ratified by over 100 countries, including the US and every state in the US. The treaty is seen as a critical part of the global anti-terrorism and anti-money laundering regimes, and aims to strengthen state and international actions towards combating and preventing terrorist acts.
