What is the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)?

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is an international organization based in Montreal, Canada, that is responsible for establishing standards, regulations, and recommended practices for civil aviation worldwide. It was formed in 1947 to develop the principles and techniques of international air navigation and foster planning and development of international air transport. ICAO works with its 191 contracting states to develop international standards and recommended practices for the safety, efficiency, and regularity of international air navigation, and security of international air transport. Among its responsibilities are the adoption of standards for aircraft navigation, communications, operation, and safety; the design and establishment of air traffic control systems; the development of standards for airports; and the regulation of international air transport services. In North Carolina, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards are implemented through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The FAA has adopted many ICAO standards and recommended practices for the safe and efficient operation of civil aircraft, and regularly monitors and enforces these standards. Under ICAO, each contracting state must provide an air transport service that complies with international air navigation and safety standards. The FAA in North Carolina is responsible for ensuring compliance with ICAO standards in the state. Additionally, the FAA works in cooperation with ICAO to promote international air transportation and maintain a safe and efficient international air transport system.
