What is the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD)?

The International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is an international treaty adopted by United Nations Resolution A/RES/61/106 in December of 2006. The Convention was developed to protect and promote the rights of persons with disabilities across the globe. Under the Convention, countries who sign and ratify the document are expected to uphold certain obligations and rights regardless of their signatory status. The Convention outlines a variety of rights and freedoms that each signatory is expected to protect. These include rights to participate in political and public life, access to justice, secure employment, and access to healthcare and social protection. The Convention also recognizes the rights of persons with disabilities to freedom from discrimination, infliction of torture or other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment, and freedom from exploitation, violence, and abuse. The United States has not yet ratified the Convention, despite Oregon passing a resolution in 2017 encouraging Congress to do so. Hopefully, in the near future, all states and countries will join the United States in ratifying the Convention and protecting the rights of persons with disabilities everywhere.
