What is the International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)?

The International Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is an international agreement adopted by over 190 countries, including North Carolina. This Convention works to protect and conserve biological diversity and the sustainable use of its components. The Convention is dedicated to the preservation of biodiversity, or the variety of life forms, in all its forms. The CBD recognizes the rights of sovereign nations to use their biological resources for the benefit of their people. However, it also recognizes the importance of sustainable use of resources, as well as the global responsibility of nations to preserve the environment. The Convention also states that all countries must take steps to conserve and protect biodiversity, such as through the adoption of formal measures and programs. The Convention calls on governments to recognize and protect the right of indigenous and local communities to their traditional knowledge of and food or agricultural production. It also requires states to cooperate in the conservation, protection, and restoration of ecological systems. Furthermore, it encourages the development of environmental education programs and the use of scientific and traditional knowledge to manage resources. The Convention has led to the creation of numerous global initiatives, such as the Global Plant Conservation Program, the Biodiversity Information System, and the International Tropical Timber Organization. These programs help to ensure that the natural world is protected and to promote sustainable management of biological resources.
