What is the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY)?

The International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) is an international court established in 1993 by the United Nations Security Council to prosecute serious crimes committed during the wars in the former Yugoslavia, including genocide. It is based in The Hague, Netherlands and is the first international court since the Nuremberg Trials and Tokyo Trials of the 1940s. The ICTY applies international criminal law to prosecute and try individuals for war crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia and thus contribute to the restoration of peace and justice in the region. The ICTY has jurisdiction over individuals in California who are believed to have committed serious crimes such as genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, or violations of the laws and customs of war, which were committed in the former Yugoslavia between 1991 and 2001.
