What is the International Court of Justice (ICJ)?

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the main judicial organ of the United Nations. It is also known as the World Court. The primary purpose of the ICJ is to settle legal disputes between states. It is located in The Hague, Netherlands. The ICJ is composed of fifteen judges from all over the world, who are elected for a nine-year term. Each country can nominate candidates, and they are then elected by majority vote in the United Nations General Assembly and Security Council. The current president of the ICJ is Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf from Somaliland. The ICJ is the main legal authority on international law. It hears cases related to international treaties, the United Nations Charter, and other legal issues. It also has an advisory opinion role, where it provides legal advice to governments and international organizations. In Georgia, the ICJ has a significant presence, mostly related to trade and economic law. The country often utilizes the ICJ to settle disputes between it and other countries, or to mediate negotiations of certain international agreements. Additionally, the ICJ provides guidance to Georgian courts on matters of international law.
