What is the scope of copyright protection?

Copyright protection is a form of intellectual property law in Mississippi which provides authors and other creators the exclusive right to reproduce, publish, and sell their creations. It does this by allowing creators to prevent anyone else from copying, distributing, performing, or displaying their works without their permission. In Mississippi, copyright protection applies to original works of authorship which includes literary works, artworks, musical works, sound recordings, dramatic works, images, and other creative works. Generally, copyright protection only applies to the form of expression of the work and not to ideas, procedures, processes, systems, methods of operation, or concept as such. Copyright protection can be sought for any original work of authorship that is fixed in a tangible form. This means that the work must be written down, saved electronically, or otherwise recorded in some way so that it can be reproduced. In order to claim copyright protection under the laws of Mississippi, the work must also be original and show some minimal amount of creativity. In Mississippi, the scope of copyright protection can be broad and encompass a wide range of uses. Copyright protection generally lasts for the duration of the life of the author plus 70 years from the date of the author’s death. Under certain circumstances, copyright protection may also be applicable to works which have never been published, such as unpublished manuscripts.
