Can employers require employees to work overtime?
In Nevada, employers are generally allowed to require their employees to work overtime, though there are a few restrictions. Nevada law requires that employers pay overtime to an employee who works more than 40 hours in a workweek. Overtime is calculated at one and one-half times the employee’s regular hourly rate. Employers may not require employees to work more than eight hours in one day or forty hours in a single workweek without paying overtime. However, employers may require their employees to work more than eight hours in a day or forty hours in a workweek if the employee is paid overtime wages. Additionally, employers in Nevada may not require employees to work overtime without providing a reasonable amount of rest periods during the day. Employees must be given at least a thirty-minute rest break each day. Generally, employers may require employees to work overtime, however, they must be aware of the restrictions set by Nevada labor and employment law and be prepared to pay employees in accordance with those requirements. Furthermore, employers should also ensure that they are providing reasonable rest periods for their employees.
