What is a labor relations specialist?

A labor relations specialist is someone who helps maintain a healthy and productive relationship between employees and employers in a workplace. In Washington, these specialists work with both management and labor to ensure that labor laws are being followed. This includes understanding and interpreting labor contracts, developing and negotiating labor agreements, and mediating labor disputes. Labor relations specialists must also educate employers, employees, and unions on labor relations laws, changes to labor contracts, labor negotiations, and legal compliance issues related to labor. They ensure that the rights of employees are being respected, and that the organization’s interests are being protected. Additionally, they may advise management on labor-related issues, such as how to correctly and legally manage labor trends. Essentially, labor relations specialists are responsible for creating and maintaining a harmonious relationship between the company and its employees. This is done by understanding and complying with labor and employment laws, monitoring and encouraging compliance with labor contracts, engaging in collective bargaining, and developing and maintaining policies and procedures for a workplace.
