What conditions qualify for medical marijuana?

In Virginia, there are currently only five medical conditions that qualify for medical cannabis use. These conditions are: 1) intractable epilepsy, 2) cancer, 3) glaucoma, 4) Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), and 5) acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). All of these conditions must be certified by a designated physician registered with the Virginia Board of Pharmacy. In addition, a person must also meet certain criteria in order to be eligible for a medical marijuana prescription in Virginia. These criteria include being 18 years of age or older, having no prior convictions of felonies related to controlled substances, and having a valid medical condition as indicated by a doctor. In order to receive a medical marijuana card, patients must apply in person or online to the Virginia Department of Health Professions. They must also provide proof of residency, identification, and written proof of the medical condition from a doctor. Medical marijuana cards are valid for two years and can be renewed by completing an application with the Virginia Department of Health Professions. In addition, those with an approved medical marijuana card must obtain medical marijuana from one of the five existing dispensaries in the state. The five existing dispensaries are the Rise Fairfax, The Botanist (in Richmond), Green Leaf Medical (in Bristol), Columbia Care (in Virginia Beach), and Dharma Pharmaceuticals (in Fredericksburg). It is important to remember that while medical marijuana may be an option for those with certain medical conditions, it is still illegal under federal law. Therefore, it is important to know the current laws regarding medical marijuana in Virginia before using it for medical purposes.
