What international conventions are related to persons with disabilities?
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities is an international convention that is related to persons with disabilities. The Convention was adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2006 and entered into force in 2008. It is the first legally-binding instrument in the field of human rights that specifically addresses the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities. The Convention promotes, respects and protects the rights of persons with disabilities to be fully included and participate in all aspects of life, including access to services, education, healthcare and employment opportunities. The Convention also encourages countries to take measures for the prevention, protection and rehabilitation of persons with disabilities in areas such as health, education, social security, housing, transportation, and recreation. It also obliges states to ensure that persons with disabilities have the same rights as others to personal mobility, and the liberty to choose their residence, and to be included in the community. In addition to the United Nations Convention, there are several other international conventions related to persons with disabilities. The European Disability Act was adopted in December 2019 and is the first legally-binding instrument at European level that specifically addresses the rights of persons with disabilities. The International Labour Organization (ILO) Disabled Workers Convention, adopted in 1983, addresses the employment of persons with disabilities and the promotion of equal opportunities in work. Finally, the Convention on the Rights of the Child, adopted in 1989, recognizes the right of children with disabilities to education, health care and recreational activities, among other rights.
