What is the scope of the Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Tropical Tuna Fishing?

The Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Tropical Tuna Fishing is a law that applies to fishing in the Pacific Ocean off the coasts of the US and Mexico. It is an international treaty that regulates the commercial catching and trade of tuna between the two countries. The Convention was signed in 1975 with the purpose of conserving tuna stocks and protecting their habitats. It is designed to ensure that the tuna population is not overexploited and that the long-term sustainability of the species is maintained. Under the Convention, both countries are required to limit the amount of tuna they take from the ocean and to strictly manage their tuna fisheries. Each country is also obligated to report their catch levels to the relevant inter-American bodies and to adhere to minimum size limits for their catch. The Convention also addresses issues such as enforcement, research, stock assessment and compliance with international conservation measures. The Convention is enforced by the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission, an international organization based in Panama which is responsible for monitoring the compliance of the participating States and is aided by an advisory committee which assists in carrying out research and management activities. This Commission and advisory committee also provide support to the participating States in developing and implementing measures to conserve and manage tuna stocks within their waters. In addition, the Convention also calls on the participating States to cooperate with each other to ensure the effective enforcement of the Convention and to develop appropriate research, monitoring and assessment activities. The Convention is designed to ensure the sustainability of tuna stocks and to protect them from overfishing, and is an important part of the Maritime Law of Washington.
