What is the scope of the International Convention for the Protection of Natural Resources and the Environment in the South Pacific Region?

The International Convention for the Protection of Natural Resources and the Environment in the South Pacific Region (the Convention) is a framework agreement between the countries of the South Pacific region. This Convention seeks to ensure that the countries in this region are committed to the protection of their natural resources and environment. The scope of the Convention is quite broad and covers a range of areas, including the protection of marine resources, protection of biodiversity, protection of the atmosphere, protection of the climate, prevention and control of pollution, conservation of water resources, conservation of land resources, conservation of forests, the sustainable use of natural resources, and the promotion of sustainable development. In addition to these core areas of protection, the Convention also covers the conservation of endangered species and habitats, the establishment of marine protected areas, and the establishment of an integrated management framework for coastal resources. It also requires the South Pacific nations to cooperate with each other in protecting their natural resources and environment. In the state of Florida, the Convention is implemented at the Federal level, on the same basis as other US Federal environmental laws. This includes the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS). The Convention also requires that the countries involved in the South Pacific region, including the US, to cooperate in the implementation of this agreement. The Convention also sets out obligations for the countries involved to report regularly on the implementation of the Convention and to take necessary administrative measures to ensure its implementation.
