What type of activities must be reported by a nonprofit organization?
In Washington, nonprofit organizations are subject to various laws which dictate the activities which must be reported to the state and federal government. Generally, these activities include any financial transactions involving the organization’s funds, the acquisition or disposal of assets, the number of people employed by the organization, and any compensation received by employees. Organizations must also report any changes to their leadership structure or any changes to its legal status. Further, any changes to the organization’s purpose, mission statement, or strategy must be noted. Additionally, organizations must inform the government of any activities conducted in furtherance of their mission, such as soliciting and receiving grants or donations, organizing or operating philanthropic or charitable programs, or engaging in political or legislative activities. Organizations must also report their efforts in providing educational services and any special events which are held. Moreover, organizations must report their lobbying activities, any activities involving the sale or exchange of goods or services, and any contracts entered into with vendors. Finally, any payments made to outside consultants or volunteer services provided must be reported.
