Yes, there are laws that protect nursing home residents from exploitation and abuse in Washington State. The Adult Protective Services (APS) law provides the framework for the prevention and investigation of abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, and abandonment of vulnerable adults in residential and home care settings. The Nursing Home Residents’ Bill of Rights in Washington State sets forth rights of residents of long-term care facilities and Nursing Home Reform laws that provide protection from abuse, neglect and exploitation. These laws include the following: •A right to be treated with respect, courtesy, and dignity; •A right to be free from restraint and abuse; •A right to privacy, including the right to control one’s own personal personal choices; •A right to personal belongings and property; •A right to participate in activities, both inside and outside the nursing home; •A right to access medical records and participate in decisions about treatment and care; •A right to access complaint procedures and information about the nursing home; and •A right to be free from discrimination based on age, race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, or disability. These laws are intended to protect nursing home residents from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
