What happens if I fail to comply with the terms of group supervision while on parole or probation?

If you fail to comply with the terms of group supervision while on parole or probation in Michigan, you will be subject to a variety of consequences. Depending on the seriousness of the noncompliance, consequences may include revocation of probation or parole, additional fines, restitution, or incarceration. If your parole or probation is revoked, you will be sent back to prison for the remainder of your original sentence. Additionally, if it is determined that you willfully violated any conditions of parole or probation, you may face additional fines or restitution. If your noncompliance is considered to be extremely serious, such as if you committed any new crimes while on probation or parole, you may even face a longer prison sentence. Michigan law also allows for probation teams to use intermediate sanctions, which are designed to punish noncompliance without sending you back to prison. These intermediate sanctions allow probation teams to use certain tactics, such as increased contact with the probation team, more frequent drug tests, or even restrictions on where a person can go or who they can spend time with. While it is your responsibility to comply with all conditions of parole or probation, you have certain rights, including the right to an attorney. Regardless of the sanctions imposed, an attorney can help you determine your best course of action moving forward.
