What medical conditions qualify for Social Security Disability?
Social Security Disability (SSD) is a program administered by the federal government that provides financial assistance to individuals who are unable to work due to a medical condition. In Virginia, applicants must meet the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) definition of disabled in order to qualify for SSD benefits. A wide range of medical conditions are considered to be disabling and may qualify an individual for SSD benefits. Physical impairments such as blindness, deafness, paralysis, or muscular dystrophy can qualify the applicant. Mental conditions such as mental retardation, schizophrenia, or autism spectrum disorder may also qualify. Breathing problems such as asthma, emphysema, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease may qualifty. Blood disorders, HIV/AIDS, or certain types of cancer may also qualify. In addition, some applicants may have a combination of conditions that would also qualify them for SSD. For example, an individual with a combination of severe physical and mental impairments might qualify. The SSA evaluates each case individually and takes into account the applicant’s medical history, current medical condition, age, education, and work experience in determining if the applicant is disabled. Individuals should contact their local Social Security office for more information on the specific medical conditions that are considered disabling for SSD purposes. An experienced Social Security attorney can also provide more information about SSD and help the individual determine if they qualify for benefits.
