Can I receive Social Security Disability benefits if I’m already receiving Social Security Retirement benefits?
In Virginia, it is possible to receive Social Security Disability benefits while already receiving Social Security Retirement benefits. Generally, Social Security Disability benefits will not reduce the amount of Social Security Retirement benefits received. However, if you are receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) disability benefits, your Social Security Retirement benefits will be reduced. Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits are based on a person’s work history and disability status. To be eligible for SSDI benefits, a person must meet certain qualifications, including having a disabling condition that lasts longer than a year and has been diagnosed by a qualified medical doctor. Additionally, a person must have worked a certain number of years in a job which is covered by Social Security Disability Insurance. If a person meets these requirements, they may be eligible to receive SSDI benefits while already receiving Social Security Retirement benefits.
