What happens if I am approved for Social Security Disability but find a job?
If you are approved for Social Security Disability (SSD) in Virginia and find a job, it may affect your SSD benefits. This is known as “work incentives.” If you are able to work while on SSD, you will be allowed to keep your benefits for a trial work period. During this period, your SSD benefits will not be affected. After the trial work period is complete, you will receive an Extended Period of Eligibility (EPE). This allows you to receive benefits for an additional 36 months to make sure you do not experience a significant drop in income. During this period, your income will be monitored and may affect the amount of benefits you receive. If you are approved for SSD and find a job, you should also know that you may be required to report your employment activity to the Social Security Administration. If you make more than a certain amount of money outside of your SSD income, you may risk losing your SSD benefits. It is important to be aware of these rules and regulations so you can ensure that you are receiving the benefits and protections that you are entitled to.
