How do I request a reconsideration for my Social Security Disability claim?
If you have applied for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits and believe that your claim has been wrongly denied, then you may need to file a request for reconsideration. A request for reconsideration is an appeal that asks for the Social Security Administration (SSA) to review the decision about your initial claim. You will need to file this request within 60 days of receiving the notice of your initial claim decision or you may lose your appeal rights. You can file a request for reconsideration by mail or in person. To mail your request, it must include: - Your full name, Social Security Number and date of birth - A statement asking for a reconsideration - A copy of the "Notice of Disapproved Claim" - Any new evidence you may have that was not included in the initial claim - Your signature To make a request in person, you can go to the Social Security Administration office located nearest to you. When you arrive, inform them that you would like to make a request for reconsideration, and they should provide you with the forms necessary to make your appeal. After you submit your request for reconsideration, the SSA will review your case and issue a new decision within 60 days. You will be informed of their decision by the same means that the initial claim decision was given. If you still disagree with their decision, you can continue to appeal at the next step.
