What is a vocational expert?
A vocational expert, or a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist, is someone who helps people with disabilities find and maintain employment. In the state of Washington, these specialists are certified by the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries and specialize in the specific field of Social Security Disability Law. Vocational experts help unemployed people with disabilities identify and acquire meaningful work opportunities, even when it seems like there is little hope for finding a job. They also help people who are already employed to stay employed, despite any physical or mental barriers they may be facing. Vocational experts assess clients’ skills, abilities, interests, and educational level to help them create a resume and find appropriate job options. They then provide supportive services, such as job coaching, to ensure that clients are able to be successful in their new job. Vocational experts also help clients file for and maintain Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits. They do this by assessing an applicant’s disability, whether physical or mental, and determining if a person meets the legal requirements for SSD eligibility. In conclusion, vocational experts work with people with disabilities in the state of Washington to help them find and keep employment and access SSD benefits.
