What is a functional capacity evaluation?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) is a type of assessment used in Washington to evaluate an individual’s abilities to do work-related activities. This evaluation is typically conducted by a physician, physical therapist, or other certified professional. It examines the individual’s mobility, strength, range of motion, balance, endurance, and other physical abilities. The FCE is often used in Social Security Disability Law cases to determine an individual’s limitations and capabilities. This assessment helps the court determine if the individual can safely do certain types of work, and it is also used to determine the level of compensation they should receive. During the FCE, the examiner may ask the individual to complete a variety of tasks, such as lifting, bending, and reaching, and to perform activities that are typical of the occupation they are planning on applying for. They can also measure reaction time, memory, concentration, and coordination. The examiner will then provide a report that includes their findings and recommendations as to what type of work the individual can do. The FCE is just one of the many pieces of evidence that is considered when evaluating a Social Security Disability Law case. Ultimately, it is up to the court to make the final determination as to whether an individual is qualified to receive benefits.
