What is a consultative exam?
A consultative exam, or CE, is an important component of the Social Security Disability Law in South Dakota. This is an exam that is conducted by an independent medical professional who assesses the applicant’s medical and mental condition, and determines whether the applicant is physically and mentally capable of performing the essential tasks of their job. The results of the CE are used to determine if the applicant should receive disability benefits. The CE is usually requested by the Social Security Administration (SSA). Typically, the SSA will send a letter to the applicant with instructions to make an appointment with a doctor or other qualified medical professional. The applicant then goes for a physical and mental exam, and the doctor provides a report to the SSA about the applicant’s physical and mental condition. The CE is an important part of the disability approval process. The report from the CE will help the Social Security Administration determine if the applicant qualifies for disability benefits. If the report finds that the applicant is unable to work, then the applicant may be approved for disability benefits. If the report finds that the applicant is able to do some work, then the applicant may be required to participate in a vocational rehabilitation program before being approved for benefits.
