What kind of medical treatment is covered by Social Security Disability?

Social Security Disability (SSD) Law in Washington provides financial help to people who cannot work due to a disability. As part of the Social Security program, SSD will cover certain medical treatments and devices related to the disability that is preventing the individual from working. For the treatments to be covered, they must be prescribed or recommended by a doctor. Generally, treatment that is necessary to improve or maintain the individual’s condition is covered. This includes doctor and hospital visits, physical therapy, rehabilitation treatments, durable medical equipment, medications, and other treatments required to keep the disability from worsening. Treatments due to cosmetic reasons and those that have a low probability of improving the disability are not covered. However, if the treatment is expected to restore function, even for a limited time, it may be covered. In addition, treatments related to the individual’s disability may be covered even if the person is unable to work. This includes any tests or treatments necessary to diagnose a condition. SSD may also cover the cost of transportation to and from the medical appointments, necessary tests and equipment, and other related expenses.
