What are the different categories of Social Security Disability benefits?
Social Security Disability benefits are divided into two main categories: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Social Security Disability Insurance is designed to provide financial assistance to individuals who have paid into the Social Security system through payroll taxes. In order to qualify for SSDI, a person must have earned a certain amount of credits through their employment, and must be unable to work due to a disability that is expected to last at least twelve months or result in death. Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, is a needs-based disability benefit program. In order to be eligible, a person must be disabled or blind, and must have limited income or financial resources. SSI also takes into consideration where the person lives and their living arrangements. In Washington, Social Security Disability benefits may also include special types of benefits for disabled adults and children, such as Social Security Dependent’s Benefits (DIB) and Disability Cessation Benefits (DCB). Social Security Disability benefits are an important resource for those who are unable to work due to a disability. It is important to consider all of the categories and options available to ensure that you receive the best benefits possible.
