What medical conditions qualify for Social Security Disability?
The Social Security Administration (SSA) considers a person to be disabled if they are unable to perform any gainful activity because of a physical or mental impairment. In Washington, the list of approved medical conditions, known as the Compassionate Allowance Conditions (CAL), is used to determine whether someone qualifies for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits. The CAL includes medical conditions such as cancer, heart disease, chronic respiratory impairments, musculoskeletal disorders, neurological disorders, and immune system disorders. In addition, a variety of mental health conditions can also qualify a person for SSD. These include depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, autism, schizophrenia, intellectual disability, personality disorder, and other mental conditions. To determine whether someone is eligible for SSD, the SSA will consider the person’s age, work history, level of education, medical records, and other relevant information. A qualified medical specialist must also assess the person’s medical condition and provide a written medical opinion. If the SSA approves the person’s claim, they will receive a monthly benefit based on their previous earnings. In summary, to qualify for Social Security Disability in Washington, a person must have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment which prevents them from engaging in any substantial gainful activity. This impairment must be listed in the Compassionate Allowance Conditions, or meet certain criteria for mental health conditions. The person must also provide supporting medical evidence, and meet other requirements as specified by the SSA.
