What kinds of income are counted against Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

Income is any money received from working, and is counted against Supplemental Security Income (SSI) in Virginia. This includes wages, salaries, bonuses, commissions, tips, vacation pay, sick pay, and other similar kinds of payments for services performed. Money received from other sources, such as Social Security, Veteran’s Disability Benefits, Black Lung, Railroad Retirement, Pension benefits, and Unemployment Compensation are also counted. If someone has a family member providing them with income, such as money from a parent or a spouse, this is also counted. In-kind income is non-cash items or services, such as food or housing, given to an SSI recipient. When someone is given in-kind income, the amount is converted to cash and is counted against their benefits. For example, if someone is given free rent, the estimated value of the rent will be counted and may reduce their benefits. In addition, if an SSI recipient has assets, such as bank accounts, stocks, bonds, real estate, or vehicles, these may also be counted against their benefits. The amount of SSI benefits someone receives each month is based on their income and assets, so if these increase their amount of income and assets, the amount of SSI benefits they receive may be reduced.
