How does a disability or impairment qualify for Social Security Disability benefits?
In California, a disability or impairment qualifies for Social Security Disability benefits when the impairment impairs your ability to work. To qualify for Social Security disability benefits in California, the disability or impairment must be expected to last for at least one year. In addition to being a physical or mental impairment, it must totally prevent you from doing any substantial gainful activity. The Social Security Administration (SSA) defines a physical or mental impairment as any physical or mental issue that keeps an individual from doing any work that one is capable of doing, or makes it difficult to do so for at least 12 months or longer. The disability must place severe limitations on the individual’s ability to do basic work activities. The SSA also considers the duration, severity, and impact of the disability when evaluating a disability claim. To qualify, a person must demonstrate that they cannot perform their old job, or any other job that can be done in their condition and situation. The SSA considers not only the physical and mental limitations caused by the disability or impairment, but also any environmental factor, such as the lack of available jobs. In order to be considered for Social Security Disability benefits, an individual must submit medical evidence that shows the disability or impairment is severe enough to meet the SSA’s criteria. If a person meets the criteria, they can then apply for Social Security Disability benefits in California.
