How does a disability or impairment qualify for Social Security Disability benefits?
In Washington, to be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits, you must have a disability or impairment that meets the Social Security Administration’s definition of disability. According to the Social Security Administration, your disability or impairment must last or be expected to last at least one year and it must severely limit your ability to work. Your impairment must be listed in the Social Security Administration’s Listing of Impairments or you must demonstrate that your impairment is of equal severity to a listed impairment. To meet the Listing of Impairments, your impairment must be medically determinable and result from a medically-acceptable diagnosis or laboratory test. Your impairment must meet or be equivalent to the criteria in the Listing of Impairments, and it must result in functional limitations that render you unable to perform any type of substantial gainful activity. If your impairment does not meet the Listing of Impairments, the Social Security Administration will consider your residual functional capacity (RFC) as well as your age, education, and work experience to determine if you can still do any type of substantial gainful activity, despite your impairment. To be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits in Washington, you must demonstrate that your disability or impairment is severe and has lasted or is expected to last at least one year and it must render you unable to do any type of significant work.
