How do I know if I qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit?
The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is a tax credit available to individuals who meet certain income requirements and have a qualifying dependent. To qualify for the EITC, individuals must have earned income from a job, which includes wages, salaries, tips, and other forms of compensation. Additionally, individuals must file a tax return and claim the credit in order to receive it. In Virginia, the credit is available to individuals who have an adjusted gross income (AGI) of less than $42,000, and have one qualifying child. For those with two or more qualifying children, the AGI limit is $49,078. Those who do not have any qualifying children may still be eligible for a smaller EITC if their AGI is less than $15,820. Additionally, to qualify for the EITC, individuals must meet certain other criteria. They must have social security numbers issued by the Social Security Administration for themselves, their spouse, and any qualifying children. They must also be U.S. citizens or have a status recognized by the IRS, and must not be filing a “Married Filing Separately” return. When filing taxes, individuals should check with their tax professional or use the IRS EITC Assistant tool on the IRS website to determine if they are eligible to receive the EITC. Additionally, those who think they may qualify for the credit can contact their local Virginia Department of Taxation to learn more.
