How do I apply for burial or funeral benefits?

If you are a veteran, you and your family may be eligible to receive burial or funeral benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). In California, there are certain benefits available to veterans and their families, including burial and funeral benefits. To apply for burial or funeral benefits, first, contact your nearest VA Regional Office or state Veterans agency. You can also apply online at the VA website or call their toll-free number at 1-800-827-1000. Before you begin the application, the VA will need to verify your military service record. You will need to provide copies of discharge or separation documents such as your DD-214, a copy of death certificate, or an active duty personnel record. In addition, you may need to provide proof that any benefits you have received have been exhausted. Once all the necessary information is collected, submit your application and supporting documents to the VA office. It may take a few weeks for the VA to review your application and make a decision. If your application is approved, you will receive information about the funeral and burial benefits for which you are eligible. If you have any questions about the application process, please contact your nearest VA Regional Office or state Veterans agency. They should be able to provide additional information and answer any questions you may have.
