What is the federal minimum wage?

The federal minimum wage is the lowest wage rate required by law for employees in the United States. According to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), the current federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. This rate was established in July 2009 and applies to workers in Arizona and all other states. In addition to the federal minimum wage, some states and municipalities have established higher minimum wages. Arizona is one state that has a higher minimum wage than the federal rate. As of January 2021, employers in Arizona must pay workers at least $12.15 an hour. This rate applies to employees of businesses with more than 14 employees. For businesses with fewer than 14 employees, the minimum wage is $11.15 an hour. It is important to note that the federal minimum wage and the minimum wage in Arizona only apply to nonexempt employees. Exempt employees are those who are not required to be paid either the federal or state minimum wage rate. In most cases, these are highly-skilled or professional workers. The federal minimum wage is an important part of wage and hour law in Arizona. It protects employees from being paid too little for their work, and provides a baseline of income for workers regardless of occupation or location.
