What is the difference between paid and unpaid leave?

The main difference between paid and unpaid leave is that paid leave allows an employee to take time away from work and still receive their wages, while unpaid leave means that an employee does not receive their wages for the time they are away. In Mississippi, employment laws govern the types of paid and unpaid leave that employers must provide. Mississippi employers must provide employees with sick leave and vacation leave, and in some cases, other types of paid leave. Mississippi employers, however, are not required to provide unpaid leave, and any unpaid leave available to employees must be agreed upon between the employer and employee. Paid leave is usually given for reasons such as vacation, illness, injury, or other personal reasons. Paid leave may also be provided for certain religious holidays or for military service. Employers are not obligated to pay employees for leave that is taken for personal reasons, such as a doctor’s appointment or vacation, and it is up to the employer to decide if they will pay for such time away from work. Unpaid leave is generally provided when an employee needs to take time off due to circumstances such as family medical leave, jury duty, or military service. During unpaid leave, employers do not pay the employee for the days they are away from work. In some cases, employers may reimburse the employee for certain expenses related to unpaid leave, such as travel expenses or medical bills.
