What are the differences between regular pay and overtime pay?
In Virginia, the wage and hour law requires employers to pay employees either regular pay or overtime pay - depending on their hours worked. Regular pay is the hourly rate an employee earns for their work and is typically calculated based on an employee’s standard work week - 40 hours. Any hours worked over 40 hours in one work week must be paid as overtime wages. Overtime pay is calculated at a rate of 1.5 times an employee’s regular rate of pay. In addition, the Virginia wage and hour law requires that employers pay employees for any hours worked for eligible work - such as training or travel time.
