What are the requirements for meal and rest periods?
In Florida, there are specific requirements for meal and rest periods. Employers must provide at least one unpaid 30-minute meal period for every eight hours worked. This meal period must be provided no later than five hours into the shift. Additionally, employers must provide employees with a 10-minute rest period for every four hours of work. The rest period must occur at or near the middle of the work shift. Employers are not required to pay employees for meal or rest periods, as long as the employee is relieved of all duties during the time. However, if an employee is required to work during the meal or rest period, they must be compensated for this time. Additionally, employees must not be required to work more than five hours at a time without a meal period. Employers must also take into consideration the age of employees when determining meal and rest periods. Those between the ages of 14 and 17 must be provided with at least a 30-minute break for every four hours of work. They must also be given a 30-minute meal period before working five hours. Employers must take into account these requirements when determining the meal and rest periods for their employees. Failure to do so could result in violation of the law and result in fines or other penalties.
