What is an occupational disease disability award?
An occupational disease disability award is a type of compensation provided under Washington state’s Workers’ Compensation law. It is available to workers who develop diseases or conditions that are caused by their work environment, or by the type of work that they do. The typical occupational disease disability award is a one-time, lump sum payment that compensates the worker for any medical expenses, lost wages, and other losses that they suffer due to the disease or condition. In order to receive an occupational disease disability award, the worker must prove that the condition was caused by their occupation. The worker must present medical evidence that proves that their condition is work-related, and that it was not caused by something else. If the worker is successful in making this claim, they may receive a number of different kinds of awards, including compensation for medical costs, rehabilitation costs, and lost wages. These awards can help the worker return to work or to adjust to a new job that can accommodate their condition. In addition to the lump sum payment, some workers may also receive additional compensation for permanent total disability and permanent partial disability, which may include the cost of retraining for a new job. It is important to note, however, that in order to receive compensation for any of these conditions, the worker must prove that their disability was caused by their job. If the worker cannot prove this connection, they will be denied an award.
