What is administrative law?

Administrative law is a branch of law that governs the activities of government agencies. These government agencies are authorized to make rules, issue regulations, render decisions, and implement laws. In Virginia, administrative law is established by the Commonwealth’s Constitution, state legislation, and court decisions. It provides the legal framework for all agencies of the Commonwealth to operate, and governs the procedures and powers of all state agencies. Administrative law gives state agencies the authority to make and enforce rules related to their areas of authority. These rules are known as administrative regulations and can be found in the Code of Virginia and the Virginia Administrative Code. Through administrative law, agencies can investigate complaints and conduct hearings to ensure their regulations are being followed. Additionally, agencies can issue decisions and rulings related to their areas of authority. Administrative law is important to Virginia citizens as it protects their rights and gives individuals the ability to challenge administrative decisions and actions. It also provides a system of checks and balances by ensuring that state agencies are held accountable for their actions. Administrative law is an essential part of our state’s legal system, and all Virginians should be familiar with their rights and responsibilities under it.
